Lossless Audio Is Coming To Spotify

Posted on 07 April 2017

After a brief testing in March, a source inside Spotify confirmed by The Verge that Spotify’s new lossless audio streaming service is just on the horizon. The currently dubbed Spotify Hi-Fi will cost an additional IDR 50-100k on top of the monthly price for its premium ad-free service. Spotify offers high quality option of 320 kbps for paid subscribers, but lossless audio will offer a significantly higher bitrate of 1,411 kbps.

Music connoisseur may prefer their lossless format compared to compressed lossy format. Lossy audio files have some of the audio information removed to enable greater reduction in file size. While lossless compresses audio file without losing any information, the file size is usually larger. Although the difference tend be difficult to detect by human hearing, clearly there is considerable percentage of listeners who prefer lossless over MP3.
