Movie Recommendation: Christmas Edition

Posted on 04 Desember 2017

When Christmas comes to mind, people would most likely think of how the season is all about warmth and fuzziness. Every year, there are plenty of heartwarming movies that captured the spirit of the season. If you have annual movie tradition, classics like Home Alone or It’s A Wonderful Life are probably on your list. This year however, we would like to invite you to thread the dark side of Christmas. We’ve curated a list of movies that scream bloody murder, rogue santa, and a not so merry Christmas.

Silent Night Deadly Night (1984)

If you need a break from the warm and fuzzy Christmas movies, this classic alternative is a must watch. This slasher movie follows a troubled individual with problematic childhood who ends up being a murderer dressed as Santa Claus. Upon its release, the movie gained controversy due to the advertising campaign that put an emphasize on the killer being dressed as Santa.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

What if Santa Claus isn’t the jolly and kind old man who we have come to believe to be? This dark fantasy thriller from Finland explores that possibility. In scenic Lapland, a British research team excavates an ancient burial mound built by the Saami people. They soon unearth a dark and terrible secret that has been buried for centuries.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Although the movie ends in a gleeful note, this stop-motion movie is an essential to the dark Christmas list. Jack Skellington, the king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town and attempts to bring his experience back to his home. Chaos and nightmare ensues as his intention fails to interpret the meaning of Christmas.

Scrooged (1988)

This dark comedy based on Charles Dickens’s classic “A Christmas Carol” features Bill Murray who stars as a mean and selfish TV executive who stops at nothing to increase his network’s ratings. On Christmas Eve, he is haunted by three spirits eager to teach him a lesson.

Black Christmas (1974)

Another slasher movie on the list, this one is inspired by a series of murders that took place in Montreal and the urban legend “The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs”. During a christmas party, a disoriented person climbs up into the attic of a sorority house in fictional town of Bedford. One by one, the residents are murdered by a mysterious assailant. This Canadian movie received praise and noted by film historians for being one of the first films of its type that end without revealing the identity of its villain.
