Let's Get Playful with Tam.Illi

Posted on 10 April 2017

1. Please introduce yourself and your role in your brand.
I’m Natasha Jasmin Aprilia and I’m the founder and designer of Tam.Illi

2. How did Tam.Illi begin?
I've always been interested in design since I was young. I actually studied Architecture in university. Tam.Illi started as a hobby in 2013 when I was working as a banker. After I taking my maternal leave, I figured that I wanted a job that’d allow me to work from home. So I resigned and decided to focus on Tam.Illi since last year.

3. What inspired Tam.Illi?
I wanted to create products that describe women, but something that no one has done before. I wanted every person who wears Tam. Illi to feel special. That’s why all of the products are designed in great detail. Everything was crafted thoughtfully; from the color, shape, and material.

4. What is the concept of your brand?
Tam.Illi is an accessory brand for women using shapes that represent women, in this case flowers. We chose flowers with vibrant colors. We explored different materials and for Bloom collection, we used artificial synthetic flowers. We also named the articles using names of flowers.

5. What is your favourite article your brand and explain why.
Lalulutres from Bloom Collection is a tricky one to make. I really like it because we put so much detail into it.

6. In the process of designing, which step do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy the finishing part, it’s when I assemble the parts together. It feels so satisfying because to get to this process, I had to put a lot of effort.

7. And what is the most difficult step?
Assembling the beads. It’s the most time consuming and requires a lot of attention because we have to carefully select each of those tiny beads. So this step defined the price of the piece as well.

8. What’s different between your usual designs and special collection for The GOODS Dept “Rabble Rouser”?

Our design had the 80’s in mind. So we chose rose because we feel that it’s very 80’s, used gold and silver beads and chains with the brooch to amplify the feel.

9. What’s next for Tam.Illi?
Right now we’re actually doing projects for a few brands so we’ve been creating products with their identity in mind. I think it’s time to take a break and cool down, find our roots and retrace our steps. See what we really want to do.

10. What do you think about the growth of fashion industry in Indonesia?
The fashion industry is definitely growing, but I hope more designers come up with original ideas. We actually ran into quite a few number of copycats.  We took it as a compliment that we were able to inspire people, but we still hope that more designers will offer original designs.
